Your messages stay on your phone. Smart Messages has no servers that store or read your messages, contacts or attachments. Backups are encrypted and go only where you choose. We use anonymous usage statistics and crash reports to improve the app, and you can turn them off at any time.

To work as your SMS app, Smart Messages reads and writes your text and multimedia messages and reads your contacts (names and photos). This data is processed only on your device. It is never uploaded to us or to any third party, never used for advertising or analytics, and never shared. Private conversations are encrypted with a key held in your device's secure hardware. Backups you create are encrypted with your passphrase and saved only to the location you pick.

No message content, phone numbers, contact names or attachments are ever sent to these services. Google processes this data under its own terms and privacy policy: policies.google.com/privacy.
Messaging features: performance of our agreement with you. Analytics and personalised ads: your consent, collected through the consent form where required. Crash reporting: our legitimate interest in keeping the app reliable (you can object by turning it off).
Messages and settings stay on your device until you delete them or uninstall the app (messages in Android's shared message store remain there, as with any SMS app). Analytics event data is kept for up to 2 months. Crash reports are kept for up to 90 days. Advertising data is kept by Google according to its policies.
We do not have user accounts, so there is no account to delete.
Smart Messages is not directed at children under 13 (or the minimum age in your country) and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Google may process the service data above outside your country, protected by Google's Standard Contractual Clauses.
Data sent to Google services is encrypted in transit. Private conversations and backups are encrypted with strong, modern cryptography (AES-256-GCM).
We will update the effective date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app.
